Rico’s top words of 2010

Rico’s Top Words of 2010

Words. Words have been the word in twenty ten. Be them Google keywords, blog metadata, or Twitter #hashtags — you were nowhere in 2010 if you didn’t get your words in line.

We’re not talking litterature here — in the ever expanding miniaturization and acceleration of our world, words have taken a weight of their own. A single word, like a trademark, can now shoot you right across the internet, from supergeeknees to hyperstardom.

So let’s check out the ones we think made the bigger bangs.

  • trending
What is? Trending is watching for internet trends. Like? Check out Twitscoop to see trends be born and die in real time, right before your eyes! It’s so 2.0
  • But why? Twenty ten has been a huge year for Twitter. Put the right #hashtag in your 140 character message, and some dude who likes your stuff will get it, right on his cellphone in Malaysia.
  • Tag cloudSeriously? Trending gets fascinating when you can link all this microdata to specific places or events. Trendsmap.com is a wonderfully powerful tool that compiles trends by location, shown over a map in realtime. Or, check out the New York Times’ “tag clouds” comparing U.S. President’s inaugural speeches. If you feel adventurous, find out how your own hashwords behave on hashtags.org.
  • clusterfuck
What is? It’s an inextricable mess. A problem so messed up, just thinking about it gives you a bellyache.
Like? The new myspace, while not being a problem in itself, is a clusterfuck of a website.
  • Jon StewartWhere is it from? Mr. Jon Stewart revendicates paternity of this word. Mr. Stewart, a late night comedy show host, has had a tremendous influence over major U.S. civil rights issues in 2010, such as the Senate’s repeal of the “Don’t ask don’t tell” military policy.
  • Is this surprising? In this post 9-11 terrified north america, exercising your freedom of speech can quickly become a punishable act of high treason against the State. The journalists we used to count on to dig out the stories now keep real quiet and toe the line in the name of National Security. Just ask Mr. Julian Assange about it. So, Mr. Stewart, being a non-accountable satirist, is one of the few who still takes the freedom to say the things that matter — he knows it, and he does it brilliantly. That, my friends, is the clusterfuck we’re in.
  • relatable
What is? It’s a quality for people who fall short on starpower, haven’t got a lot to say, and don’t have any other discernable talent either.
Like? PR people pulled out a “she’s relatable” when explaining how come Sarah Palin’s not especially nimble daughter was still competing on TV Show “Dancing with the Stars”.
  • Carmen ElectraWhy care? Well because, as our example limpidly demonstrates, “relatability” is the one base quality you want, if you’re going to have any chance to make it as a public figure in North America. You might think you’d get away with being a badass roughneck or as a psychopath, but really, you’d fall short. Badassedness ain’t that hot anymore. Today’s crop of strippers (like Carmen Electra), rappers (like Snoop Dogg) or even serial killers (like Showtime character Dexter) may be baaad, but they’re also very well versed in the subtle balancing act that is mainstreaming.

Well, that was fun! There, another year has just gone us by. Hopefully, you and me, we’ve learned to take the good outta the bad, and we’ve thrown a couple of curve balls of our own.

Keep the spirit. See y’all soon.
xxx Rico & Luke
