Here are some strong, sexy, sublime scenes from HBO’s True Blood series. In my mind, these are easily on par with anything the great cinema classics ever had to offer. Don’t you think “Godric turns Eric” has a definite Bergmanian vibe? The Death character, the metaphysical dialogue — or maybe it’s the subtitled swedish.
I’m not afraid.
I’m furious.

Then there’s season three’s Strip Club scene. Mr. Vampire Bill hits the clubs looking for a sacrificial stripper, and finds one who looks absent. Using his powers to peek into her thoughts, he unveils her black, bottomless despair. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything sadder at the movies… truthful, painful, this scene goes places you’d rather not visit too often. And there’s that Massive Attack tune…
from season 3, episode 4
And the dungeon scene, well, it’s just crazy awesome. There’s one thing you need to understand — like Sookie, barging into Fangtasia’s downstairs lair, is about to — it’s that vampires have lots of time on their hands. Sheriff Eric Northman, for instance, has been around for a thousand years; so regular plain lovemaking just doesn’t cut it for him anymore. His “employee” Yvetta doesn’t seem to mind at all. I just love this scene — the way Sookie manages to keep composure, while Eric, flamboyantly bared, is pushing cracks about her lover Bill.
from season 3, episode 1
I mean, I love the big screen for the action, for digitized megalopolises and various exploding roller coasters. But, over the course of a regular TV season, you get to spend over 9 hours getting to know the show’s characters — almost enough to call ’em friends. And then, you can even chat with them — the real ones, obviously — on Twitter.
So, given the current level of quality in US TV series, coupled with the compelling density of HD and the possibility to watch your shows on demand, it’s become clear to me that there isn’t much going for the good ol’ movies anymore. I’ll be missing the excitement of gathering with a bunch of people in a dark theater, though.
That’s what these hypertimes are like, it seems — but that’s another story already.
